Lecture and Tour of Great Lakes Naval...

Description

The Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society will note the 100th anniversary of Great Lakes Naval Base in the military facility's museum on Saturday, Nov. 12, a day after Veterans Day. The program is free for members of the Historical Society and $15 for non-members. Space is limited and reservations can be made by calling the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society at 847-234-5253.

The Program begins at 10:00 am and includes both a lecture and a docent-led tour of the museum's sparkling exhibits tracing the history of the U.S. Navy and the base. Guests should meet directly at the Great Lakes Naval Museum, 610 Farragut Avenue.

Great Lakes opened on July 1, 1911; six years after President Theodore Roosevelt first suggested building a naval base on land in the Midwest and far from an ocean. In its century-long history, the base has graduated 3.5 million recruits, and has been the Navy's only recruit-training facility since 1996. Today, it processes about 35,000 recruits a year. It also is home to technical training schools for surface warfare.

The museum, designated an official Department of the Navy Museum, opened in 2009.
