Money in Politics: Its Impact on Gun ...

Description

In the wake of the mass shootings and student marches advocating change, the League of Women Voters of Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Area invites the public to its program, "Money in Politics: Its Impact on Gun Safety Policy,” on Wednesday, May 2. Featured speakers include local Rep. Brad Schneider of the 10th Congressional District and Lake Forest High School student Elizabeth Porter. The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest (400 E. Illinois Road). The response of students following the February mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, has revived discussions about gun violence prevention, gun safety policies, and legislation. This includes how the influence of money in politics shapes public policy. A high school senior, Porter is a writer for her high school newspaper (The Forest Scout) and a National Merit Finalist, varsity athlete, and a member of the National Honor Society and Cum Laude Society. She helped publicize and participate in the student walk-out at Lake Forest High School on March 14. The event is free and open to the public.
